My Biography

Portrait artist, illustrator and sculptor Charles A. Smith, II began making his mark on the global art scene even before graduation with honors from The Art Institute of Pittsburgh with a degree in Graphic Design.

While traveling through Thailand, Cambodia and Korea in 1999 his portraits and drawings were very popular and remain displayed in galleries and private collections throughout these areas. One critic writes, “… his figurative drawings and painting’s evoke strong emotions while exploring the strength and beauty of the human form.”

In December of the same year a portrait Charles painted of Whoopi Goldberg as the Mona Lisa caught the attention of the actress/comedienne who purchased the piece which was featured on her website. Other celebrity owners of Charles’ portraiture include Pittsburgh Pirate owner, Kevin McClatchey, promoter Don King, entertainer Eartha Kitt and actor John Lithgow.

A member of both The American Society of Portrait Artists and The American Society of Classic Realism, Charles was named Pittsburgh’s Best Artist of 2000 in a juried show attended by over 4,000 celebrities and art collectors at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York.

The following year a selection of 20 paintings inspired by Charles’ recent travels aptly titled, Transcultural Expression, were presented at the Mendelson Gallery in Shadyside. Next, a solo exhibit of his figurative drawings and sculpture was held at Pittsburgh’s Blue Ruin Gallery and several printed articles including The Pittsburgh Post Gazzette, The Tribune Review, In Pgh Weekly, The City Paper, and CMYK Magazine.

In 2002, while teaching sculpting at Hope Academy, the Bayer Corporation honored his African art with a display for Black History month. 2003 began with a downtown display of Charles’ religious paintings presented by the Pittsburgh Partnership with help from Mayor Murphy’s office. Numerous other exhibits, including a return to Mendelson, followed by an auction of one of Charle’s oil paintings at the Carnegie Museum of Art for a third consecutive year.

To date his paintings have raised thousands of dollars for various charities in the Pittsburgh area.
